ISO 3834 (Welding Quality)

Quality requirements for fusion welding of metallic materials. Welding is a "special process," meaning the final product's quality cannot be fully verified by non-destructive testing alone; quality must be built in during production.

Mastering the Special Process

ISO 3834 defines comprehensive quality requirements for welding operations in workshops and on-site. It is often mandated by clients in heavy engineering, pressure vessel manufacturing (ASME), railways (EN 15085), and structural steel (EN 1090).

WPS & WPQR Documentation

Developing technically sound Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and conducting tests to establish Welding Procedure Qualification Records (WPQR) to prove the weldment's mechanical and metallurgical properties.

Welder Qualification

Ensuring all welders and welding operators hold valid qualifications (WPQ) according to relevant standards (e.g., ISO 9606, ASME Sec IX), and tracking their continuity and defect rates.

NDT Inspection Coordination

Managing Non-Destructive Testing (RT, UT, MT, PT) requirements, acceptance criteria, and ensuring NDT personnel are certified to ISO 9712 or ASNT SNT-TC-1A.

Control of Welding Consumables

  • Strict storage and baking procedures for electrodes (e.g., low hydrogen electrodes) to prevent hydrogen-induced cracking.
  • Traceability of parent materials, filler metals, and shielding gases through heat numbers and material test certificates (MTCs).
